A Legacy That Endures

Happy New Year! I thought this was a great gravestone up in Naalehu’s cemetery. Buster was a Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) and behind his granite marker is a statue of a horse. Perfect. I come from the heritage of six foot under with polished granite gravestone markers. In the age of cremation and casting ashes into the sea, what part of our legacy will be left for future generations? Buster will be remembered 200 years from now as a paniolo. I’m hoping that our paintings will be our lasting legacy. This may be wishful thinking on my part. I have to admit I’ve bought framed paintings from goodwill specifically to paint over the canvas and to recycle the frame. Did I destroy a legacy? Painting over someone else’s paintings has been going on for ages as the radiologic studies of some of the old masters show. I guess only time will tell.
